(Tanzania) Going to Dar es Salaam, the biggest city in Tanzania

I am going to Dar es Salaam, largest and richest city, serving as a regionally important economic centre.

Tanzania

18th ~ 23rd July 2013
I’ve stayed at two European houses in Morogoro. One of them wants to make Kimchi. I’ve never made it before, because kimchi is mother’s stuff. My host has some recipe which she got from other Korean long time ago. I also research some other recipe on the internet.
Actually it is not the same way my mom made. But here is Africa! So, just we make Kimchi easiest way.

(This site will help you! This is run by Korean who has lived in the U.S for long time that she speaks English.)

Tanzania

Taste… is… oh…
This Kimchi is the hottest Kimchi ever I’ve eaten. Even it is too hot to eat for Korean! We didn’t have Korean hot pepper flakes that we just put some spicy pepper ground.  I guess after a few weeks, it will less hotter. Anyway it is my first time to make Kimchi. My mom will be proud of me. She might say like this “Now, you can get married!”

My body is not good today although I was off for a week, but anyway I am again on a bike. There are usually two jobs, to write journal or to cycle a bike.
After 20 km (13 mi), there is some Korean word! I am so curious that what this is? I guess it would be KOICA (Korea International Cooperate Agency). I just cycle a bit to village, but it is too dirty road that I give up going into village.

Tanzania

I try to set up my tent at local people house. But people are too conservative that it is complicating. I have to get permit from chief of the town. Later they let me set up tent. But they ask to show my passport. I’ve slept hundreds of people’s house in Americas. But people never asked my passport. But in Africa, although they are too poor, sometimes they want to check my passport. I am wondering that what they are afraid of?
Police come to me as well. I have been asked and written my name and more things on paper.

I love cloud when it is too hot. Today the weather is perfect that there is cloud all over the sky!

Tanzania

It is my lunch which is made of fried chips and eggs for 2000 Tsh (1.3$.). I feel so hard today. Many of Tanzanian Street men are too rude at the way to Dar (Too much hassle and harass).

Tanzania

I always do my best to stop one or two hours before the sunset. But I couldn’t find a hotel I want that I just keep cycling until 7 pm. I only cycle on the main road that I am sure that I won’t kidnapped.
Finally I find a cheap and nice hotel. It is 20,000 Tsh (13$), but there is fan and air conditional! What a nice!

Here Dar es Salaam is! Though Dar es Salaam lost its official status as capital city to Dodoma in 1974 (a move not completed until 1996), it remains the locus of the permanent central government bureaucracy, continuing to serve as the capital of the surrounding eponymous region.

Tanzania

There are too many touts. I checked information on internet before that Flying horse is the cheapest. But every tout tells me that they are selling it. When I go there, the price is more expensive than what I expect. Later I find the office of Flying horse. It is located at the last and yellow building.

Tanzania

I buy ferry ticket to Zanzibar for 34,000 Tsh (20$). It will take over three hours. I didn’t know that I buy VIP ticket. They only sell foreigner VIP ticket. But actually I don’t feel I am VIP customer. VIP room has air conditional, but I stay at a deck to watch my luggage.

Tanzania

Finally after a few hours, I am close to Zanzibar Island. It is so surprising that the style of architecture is totally different from any other place I’ve been in Africa.

Tanzania

I am wondering what kind of the secret the island keeps?

  1. I remember I flew to Zanzibar with Coastal Airlines four years ago. It took 35 minutes and 70$ from Dar es Salaam. There was no security check at the airport and you could sit next to the pilot in the plane.

    • Hello Stef,
The price doesn’t look expensive! I think from Dar es Salaam to Arusha is cheap as well.
Thanks for sharing your experience! 🙂

  2. Preparing and eating Kimchi in Tanzania! What a strange thing this must have been. I am currently moving through your earlier blog posts and this is such a fulfilling task for me at the moment. It’s beyond my imagination that you already went so far at that time, but still had 10 years of traveling abroad before you. I also like the way you explain what you see and feel while you cycle through many African countries. Thankfully, there are so many more episodes to read.
