Why I am not having Patreon

Patreon is the website helping creators getting money from followers. I made the Patreon account in 2016 after thinking a lot. I nearly made my travel page. But then I realized something and decide not to have it.

Let me tell you four reasons I am not having it.

1. I don’t want to discriminate against my friends.

I have been cycling around the world since September 2011. I start writing the blog to organize what I learn from my travel. I am happy to share it with everyone. Some of the people who check my blog are the ones helping me like providing the place to stay or inviting me to meals. And also I make friends while traveling like from hostel or we cycle together and so on. But then if I put only a special update video for people paying through Patreon, how about people who helped me and nice to me? It is ignoring them which I don’t want.

2. I don’t want to give up my Paypal donation.

I have PayPal donation from the beginning of my trip and I like to keep it. But then if I don’t give any special service to people donating through Paypal, that’s another discrimination.

3. Patreon doesn’t help marketing but taking a fee.

Patreon has been there for over eight years but they have not made a marketing system still. There is no recommendation like the youtube algorithm that you only find people by searching their name on Patreon. Then why do I have to choose Patreon over Paypal? Also, there is a monthly payment option on Paypal. Paypal is taking the fee but it’s less than Patreon at the end.

4. I don’t like promises because I am a traveler.

If I use Patreon, I should promise to followers like “I will give you private video one a week or month” or “I will send you this if you pay more than this.” But it was impossible while traveling and it’s too much pressure to enjoy my own trip if I have to promise.

So here is the conclusion.

Definitely, I need money just like anyone else and I like money too.  You think it’s something wrong to like money, please send all your money to me cause you don’t need to have things you don’t like. 😉

My point is that I do like to get money as well but Patreon doesn’t fit on my travel. I don’t want to discriminate against my friends and followers that I want to share my stories with everyone. I don’t want to give up my Paypal donation which is simpler than Patreon. Patreon takes extra fees without helping marketing. I don’t want the pressure of keeping my promise while traveling.

I hope my explanation is enough to make you understand why I am not having it. If you have Patreon or want to it for your travel or contents, that’s totally fine. Anyone who works needs to get that effort back. It’s just up to you how you will get that payment. I choose Paypal donation but you can choose Patreon if you want for your work.
